Orthodontics for Children
What is the difference between early orthodontic treatment and regular orthodontic treatment, and why might my child need early treatment? How will early treatment benefit my child in the long run?
These are just a few of the questions surrounding the topic of early orthodontic treatment for children. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist as early as age seven. At this point, we can evaluate whether your child will need orthodontic treatment.
Early treatment (also known as Phase One) typically begins around age eight or nine, with Phase Two following around age 11 or older. Early treatment aims to correct the growth of the jaw and certain bite problems and help make room for permanent teeth to come in correctly, which lessens the chance of extractions in the future.
Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult and leave little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future. Our team is happy to work together to give your child a lifetime of smiles!
Orthodontics for Teens
For teens around Cedar Rapids, Marion, and the surrounding area, the most common time for orthodontic treatment at Parks, Schmit, & Fuller Orthodontics is between 11-16.
Our team of experienced orthodontists can easily recognize spacing, crowding, bite, and alignment issues in this age range. By this age, your teen’s bone and jaw structure are formed enough to allow orthodontic treatment to begin.
At our four office locations, your teen can choose between Invisalign clear aligners, metal braces, or clear ceramic braces. Each of these choices offers unique benefits while transforming your teen’s smile.
If you notice any of the following issues, come in for a free consultation with our doctors since they could be signs your teen may benefit from orthodontic treatment at our office.
- Early, late, or irregular loss of their baby teeth
- Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face
- Difficulty with chewing or biting
- Protruding teeth
- Frequent biting of the cheek or the inside of the mouth
- Teeth that meet abnormally or not at all
- Crowding or extra spacing between teeth
- Jaws that shift or make sounds
Beyond outward appearances, untreated dental problems can have a lasting impact on your teen’s oral and overall health, so talk to Parks, Schmit, & Fuller Orthodontics about any questions.
Orthodontics for Adults
Your smile is the first thing other people around Cedar Rapids and Marion notice about you. Do you love yours?
You’re never too old to benefit from orthodontic treatment, and that’s why we offer orthodontics for adults at Parks, Schmit, & Fuller Orthodontics.
Believe it or not, your teeth don’t stop moving when you get older. Teeth that seemed straight and aligned in youth could have shifted later in life, which can lead to jaw pain, trouble brushing, or a smile you’re unhappy with.
If you leave misaligned teeth untreated, you may end up with other dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. You may also notice abnormal wear on the surface of your teeth or that it’s difficult to chew normally.
Drs. Parks, Schmit, Fuller, and Wittchow can address these issues and more through orthodontic treatment, giving you a healthy smile you’ve always dreamed about.
Why Should You Think About Orthodontic Treatment?
Straight Teeth Are Healthy
After your orthodontist aligns your teeth correctly, it’s easier for you to clean them through regular flossing and brushing. This helps prevent other oral issues, including some problems affecting your overall health.
Straight Smiles Build Confidence & Self-Esteem
Successful orthodontic treatment at Parks, Schmit, & Fuller Orthodontics can help boost your self-confidence, create a better quality of life, and allow you to smile with pride.
Untreated Oral Issues Will Get Worse
If you refuse or delay orthodontic treatment when your orthodontist recommends it, you may run into long-term health issues that may wind up costing you more in the end.
At Parks, Schmit, & Fuller Orthodontics, our team understands that teens, kids, and adults all have different dental needs, so we give each age group personal care.
We’ll work diligently to make sure you receive the most appropriate treatment at our inviting offices in Cedar Rapids and Marion, IA.
